TACLOBAN CITY, April 10 (PNA) - A 5.4-magnitude
earthquake shook Northern Samar province Monday morning, the Philippine
Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
There were no immediate reports of damage to
properties or injuries from the quake recorded at 8:43 a.m. The agency placed
the epicenter some 74 kilometers from Palapag, Nothern Samar.“The shaking
lasted for 15 seconds. The highest intensity recorded was Intensity 3, but we
have not received any report of damages,” said Office of the Civil Defense
regional director Edgar Posadas in a text message.
Ground shaking was felt at varying intensities in
Palapag (Intensity 3); Catarman in Nothern Samar, Cabid-an and Juban in
Sorsogon, and Panganiban in Catanduanes (Intensity 2); and Tacloban City, Palo
in Leyte, Legazpi City, Masbate City, Borongan in Eastern Samar and Sorsogon
City (Intensity 1).
From April 1 to 10 this year, Phivolcs has already
recorded five minor earthquakes in the region.
These are in Catbalogan City
(Magnitude 4.2); Palapag, Northern Samar (Magnitude 3.0); Biri, Nothern Samar
(Magnitude 2.4); Mercedes, Eastern Samar (Magnitude 2.7), San Policarpo,
Eastern Samar (Magnitude 3.8).
The presence of the active Philippine Fault Zone
and lineaments have put 29 towns and cities in Eastern Visayas as high risk to
earthquakes, according to Phivolcs. (PNA)
