MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, April 10 (PNA) – The Department of Public Works and Highways Southern Leyte District Engineering Office (DPWH-SLDEO) has deployed “Lakbay Alalay” teams in strategic areas to help travellers this Holy Week.

Heeding DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar’s directive, District Engineer Ma. Margarita Junia has reactivated its motorist assistance program starting today until next Monday, April 17.

“Lakbay Alalay teams are composed of DPWH personnel and mechanics ready with equipment and service vehicles. They will be placed in strategic locations along national roads to assist motorists,” Junia said on Monday.

The 16-men skeletal force are deployed in six strategic areas along national roads – Maasin City area; Divisoria Junction, Bontoc town; Junction Sogod (Maharlika Highway), Sogod town; Junction Maharlika Concepcion, Sogod town; Junction Concepcion, San Miguel, Sogod town; and Junction Himay-angan (Maharlika Highway), Liloan town.

Uniformed motorist assistance teams will provide personal and prompt assistance on normal and emergency situations in strategic locations along major thoroughfares on a round-the-clock shift.

“They were directed to coordinate with the Land Transportation Office, Philippine National Police, Local Government Units and other government agencies for any assistance that may be required,” Junia added.

Earlier, Secretary Villar directed regional directors and district engineer to conduct inspection and ensure all major routes are free from potholes, pavement markings are reflectorized, and proper signages and warning signs are installed within clear and safe distance of all on-going construction projects.

Field officials were also ordered to ensure that legible informational and directional signs are installed on visible locations along national roads. DPWH likewise facilitated the removal of any obstruction along the right-of-way of national roads and bridges such as vendors and illegally parked vehicles to ensure the safety of the motoring public.

Junia said clearing the road right of way and installation of informational signs have been the regular activity of DPWH-SLDEO all year round.(PNA)
