Eastern Visayas cops step up Lenten season security

PALO, Leyte, April 10 (PNA) - The Philippine National Police (PNP) regional office here directed all police stations to secure airports, seaports and bus terminals to ensure the safety of the public during the observance of the Holy Week.

Chief Supt. Elmer Beltejar, PNP regional director, ordered policemen to brace for the Holy Week following the peaceful holding of the international conference of the United Cities of Local Governments-Asia Pacific in Catbalogan City last week.

On Monday, the police's highway patrol unit deployed road safety marshals to ensure the safety of motorists.

“Yes, the PNP is still on red alert. It was not lifted since the bombing in Davao City on September 2, 2016,” Chief Insp. Ma. Bella D. Rentuaya, PNP regional spokesperson, said on Monday.

The PNP continues to implement checkpoints, conduct law enforcement functions, encourage the participation of force multipliers and volunteers to augment the local police in their respective areas of responsibility.

There are police assistance desks in the ports and bus terminals and in places where people converged like churches and other areas holding Lenten observance.(PNA)
