TACLOBAN CITY, March 11 (PNA) -- The Department of
Agriculture (DA) is eyeing a rebound in Eastern Visayas' agricultural output
this year, citing favorable weather.
Regional focal person of the DA's High-Value Crops
Development Program (HVCDP), Francisco Dayap, said the region will not likely experience
prolonged dry season and extended rainy days this year.
“We are expecting a positive growth in vegetable
and root crop production this year because the weather seems favorable and so
far, there has been no forecast of extended abnormal weather,” he said.
The DA has been mapping out strategies to raise
output this year after a production shortfall in 2016. The farm department, in
partnership with local government units, will distribute 900 kg. of assorted
vegetable and root crop planting materials in the region.
“Many non-governmental organizations have been
helping us promote vegetable cultivation. The support for vegetable and root
crops is through the distribution of assorted seeds,” Dayap said.
In 2016, high-value crop production in Eastern Visayas
dropped by 1.9 percent.
These crops include mongo, peanuts, cabbage,
eggplant, sweet potato, and cassava. (PNA) CVL/SQM/John Ray B. Sudario (OJT)
