Gender sensitivity pushed for ‘Yolanda’ resettlement sites

TTACLOBAN CITY, March 11 (PNA) – The National Housing Authority (NHA) is pushing for gender-sensitivity in the resettlement of families hit by super typhoon Yolanda.

NHA regional office estate management specialist head Dorcas Secreto said their office had been consulting with relocation site dwellers to come up with resettlement gender and development mainstreaming manual.

“All aspects in building permanent housing units, it should have a gender sensitivity approach in order to have an equitable participation between man and women in all housing aspects from community organization to the types of units being constructed,” Secreto said.

NHA plans to improve the relocation sites by putting partitions to create more privacy at home.

“The focus of resettlement planning is at the household level and to understand the failure of intra-household dynamics is more likely to adversely affect women than men,” she added.

NHA will also assess housing projects before approval of designs to ensure privacy of family members.

Nearly 7,000 families have been moved from danger coastal communities to the northern part of the city. (PNA) RMA/SQM/Felgin C. Silagan (OJT)
