Leyte gov’t hails junior power lifter medalist

TACLOBAN CITY, Sept. 14 (PNA) -– The Leyte provincial government has congratulated a young power lifter who bagged silver and bronze medals in the recent power lifting competition held in Szczyrk, Poland.

Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla extended his felicitation to Rowella Andrea Abrea, a Leyte Sports Academy (LSA) athlete, for bringing pride to the province.

LSA offers the provincial government's grassroots sports development program.

“Her success is not just an honor for the province, but for the country as well. The achievement of LSA athlete is the realization of our dream to produce quality athletes from the region that the country can be proud of,” Petilla said.

Abrea competed for the sub-junior category and won silver medal for Dead Lift (127.5 kilograms) and bronze for Bench Press (67.5 kilograms).

The 16-year-old athlete said that she feels blessed for her achievements this year, representing the country in two power lifting competitions abroad.

“I am thankful that God guided me and blessed me with strength,” said Abrea, a native of Matag-ob, Leyte, who also won gold at the Asian Powerlifting Championship held in India in July this year.

Abrea is one of the four members of the Philippine Powerlifting National Team that competed in Poland.

About 30 countries that included Philippines, Russia, United States, Japan and Ukraine participated in the Junior and Sub-Junior World Powerlifting Championship held in Poland from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1. (PNA)
