Samar team wins 2nd place in 15th Philippine Robotics Olympiad

TACLOBAN CITY, Sept. 14 (PNA) -- The team from Saint Augustine International School (SAIS) of Calbayog City won 2nd place in the ongoing 15th Philippine Robotics Olympiad (PRO) held at SM City North EDSA in Quezon City.

SAIS Robotics Team A is composed of Francis Joseph Grey, Reggie Araneta and Gerald Parcon, who are junior high school students.

The team got 30 points, making them the second fastest robot builder and was also adjudged as the second place winner for the 15th PRO. Students from Cebu City got 31 points and won the 1st place.

Other winners are Makati students (3rd place with 25 points) and Cubao students (4th place with 21 points). Winning teams will represent the country in the World Robotics Olympiad this November in India.

“As part of the preparation for the World Robotics Olympiad, the team will have their training in Manila organized by Felta,” Grey said.

“Winning the competition only shows that students from the region especially Samar province are also talented and smart,” he added.

From just eight participating schools when the Olympiad was launched 16 years ago, the number rose to 600 schools this year.

PRO aims to support the progressive campaign of the government towards promotion of science and technology interest among youth, particularly in robotics as new alternative of effective learning.

The event also integrates interplay of “instructivism” and “constructivism” as an effective medium in teaching robotics towards the discovery of promising Robotics-Scientist.

PRO is an annual science educational event that primarily aims to challenge the intellectual skills and critical thinking of elementary and high school students.

This year’s event opened on June 17 and will conclude in December 2016.

The Olympiad also aims to offer new perspective and great opportunities in relation to the rising demands of Robotics in the local and international scene. (PNA)
