Leyte town prepares for festival despite aftershocks

CARIGARA, Leyte July 14 -- Residents of Carigara in Leyte are preparing to celebrate their annual town fiesta this Sunday to pay homage to the town's patron saint for giving them a new life after the July 6 earthquake and continuing aftershocks. 

Mayor Eduardo "Boy" Ong told Philippine News Agency on Thursday night that "while we are still living under this condition, we still want to celebrate our fiesta not only with a mass but with our festival honoring our patron saint Sta. Rosa."

"She protected us from such a strong earthquake and this is more than enough for us to celebrate and rather our way of thanking her for all she has given us," he added.

The residents are busy preparing ffor "Kalsada ni Gara", one of Carigara’s largest street festivals, which takes place in its 49 barangays.

Even though, aftershocks can still be felt, people were seen decorating their streets with beautiful designs and displays with lights in a bid to outshine each other. 

The Carigara mayor said in an interview Thursday night that they will be providing a reliable supply of electricity to the barangays by renting generators.

However, power has been restored around 1:00 a.m. of Friday in Tacloban City and nearby towns.

Mayor Ong said that they also requested for security augmentation force from the police and military to be deployed in the town during the festival. 

They also rented K-9 units to be used, especially during night activities, in order to deter threats or any unlawful activity along the streets of Carigara and at the plaza.

CCTV cameras were also installed at the plaza and in other activity areas of the town to prevent any crime. 

At least 900 individuals of Barangay Hiluktugan of Carigara Leyte were displaced by a landslides triggered by a strong quake that crashed down into the village during the quake.

Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Officer of Carigara Leyte, Alejo Urmeneta told PNA, that they don’t have casualty but there are 26 injured patients admitted at Carigara Hospital, including two babies from Barangays San Isidro and Irahan.
