Duterte gives cash aid to families of quake fatalities

ORMOC CITY, July 13 --President Rodrigo R. Duterte on Thursday gave financial assistance to the families of those who died during the quake.

The family of Gerry Novilla, 43, of Kananga, Leyte received PHP 20,000. Novilla was trapped in the collapsed New Town Grocery in Kananga. His partner Merlinda Pacquiao, and his son and daughter received the cash assistance. 

Romeo and Nemesia Rosales, parents of Rhissa Rosales, with her five-month old daughter received the P20,000 assistance from the President, who pushed through with his visit to this quake-city after Monday's cancellation. Nemesia said the family is sad to what happened to their daughter. 

Rhissa, 19, of Ormoc City died from falling debris at the residence of her partner during the quake.

The President said he is satisfied with the intervention of the government here after the earthquake. "You have shown to the people that they have a functioning government and ready to serve our people," he said. 

Department of Social Welfare and Development Judy Taguiwalo said the agency has provided food and non-food items, and PHP5,000 cash assistance to injured individuals and P10,000 burial assistance to the the families of two fatalities. (Vicky Arnaiz/PNA)
