ORMOC
CITY, Leyte, Dec. 13 (PNA) –- The local government of Tabango, Leyte
will step up the promotion of sports tourism as a strategy to prevent
illegal drugs use among youths.
Mayor Bernard Jonathan Remandaban
has been keen in promoting the town’s tourism not just to foreign or
Manila-based visitors, but also among locals.
“Aside from
eco-tourism and social tourism where foreign nationals responded, we do
not want to disregard sports tourism. This way, we hit two birds with
one stone, persuading our youths to indulge into sports and avoid
illegal drugs,” the local chief executive said.
Remandaban said pushing for sports tourism is very timely now that the central government has stepped up its anti-drug war.
The
town’s major sports tourism event is the Tabango Triathlon 515, with a
total of 51.5 kilometer run, bike and swim. This year’s event held on
Sunday was joined by triathletes from Cagayan de Oro, Bohol, Carigara,
Tacloban, Palompon and Ormoc.
At least 21 triathletes competed for
two events: sprint with 750-meter swimming, 20 and five-kilometer
biking and run, respectively, and standard olympic distance of
1.5-kilometer run, 40-kilometer biking and 10-kilometer run.
To
sustain this, he plans to invite triathletes to train potential scholars
from various schools and entice them to bring focus to sports for
healthy living and keep away from illegal drugs.
On
the same day, the drug surrenderers along with the local government
officials and the community vowed to support the government in the
battle against illegal drugs by affixing signature on the pledge of
commitment during the town’s launching of Mamamayan Ayaw sa Anomaliya;
Mamamayan Ayaw sa Illegal na Droga (Masa Masid) program. (PNA)
