TACLOBAN
CITY, Nov. 16 (PNA) -- The city’s first ever footbridge is not yet functional
pending the completion of an elevator for persons with disabilities (PWDs), but
it is set to be ready by December, the Department of Public Works and Highways
(DPWH) said.
Margarito
Pabillo, Jr., DPWH Tacloban office construction engineer, said that the city
government and Robinsons Place Tacloban will have to sign a memorandum of
agreement on running the elevator.
“We have to
make sure that it is friendly to PWDs before opening it to the public,”
Margarito said.
The
PHP13.5-million footbridge project, crossing the four-lane busy highway, aims
to ease traffic along the city’s major highway fronting Robinson’s Place. The
project started January this year and it is scheduled for opening next month.
The
government aims to make the project functional this holiday season with the
expected influx of shoppers, including PWDs.
Under the
agreement, the mall operator is committed to provide electricity to run the
elevator and secure the structure.
The
footbridge, built by DPWH, has a length of 23.7-meters and a vertical clear
height of 5.3-meters. (PNA)
