TESDA asks local gov’t to help generate more jobs

TACLOBAN CITY, Oct. 6 (PNA) – The Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA) urged local government units (LGUs) to take a wider role in job generation.

Speaking before participants of the regional consultation with stakeholders in Eastern Visayas on Wednesday, TESDA Director General Guiling Mamondiong noted that the private sector is the largest job generator.

“Without the help of the private sector, our country’s economy will not improve because they have been creating jobs,” Mamondiong said.

The government, according to him, has no capability to generate thousands of jobs, but they can provide incentives to investors.

“Every time there is an issue of unemployment, it is always the President who is blamed for this problem. He is accused for not making solution to this problem. But if only the local government units (LGUs) would exercise their power they could create thousands of jobs,” Mamondiong said.

LGU may also create jobs by organizing small groups to form a cooperative, but for more jobs, the local government should promote public-private partnership.

“The local government should stop thinking that it’s the primary task of the national government to create jobs,” he added.

On the other hand, the TESDA chief urged jobseekers to acquire training and skills through the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, and TESDA.

Likewise, the official also called on national government agencies to do their share in creating jobs, citing the Department of Tourism as example, by promoting every local government units in the region as tourist destination. (PNA)
