TACLOBAN
CITY, July 13 (PNA) -- The Leyte provincial board created the games and
amusement committee that will review the application for new cockfighting arena
in the province.
The board
approved during Tuesday’s regular session the proposal of Board Member Trinidad
Apostol (2nd district) as she noticed that some town councils approved an
ordinance for establishment of cockfighting arenas.
Apostol
noticed that the committee on games and amusement was not created during their
inaugural session last week.
The
provincial board agreed to appoint neophyte Board Member Matthew Torres (4th
district) as chair of the new committee and Apostol as vice chair.
The
committee will review all applications for new cockfighting arenas in the
province, to see if they comply with the requirements and check whether their
applications are within existing laws.
Based on the
existing laws, only one arena is allowed in each city or town, except in areas
with more than 100,000 population.
This is a
challenging task, but I am thankful for the trust to lead the committee,”
Torres said.
Aside from
cockpit creation and operation, the committee will also focus on the operation
of internet cafes in the province to make sure that children, who will enter
such establishments, will be there for educational purposes.
Torres said
that this action supports President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to strictly
implement the minor ordinance. This ensures that children will not be in these
establishments during class hours and late nights. (PNA)
