Tourism dep’t braces for La Niña impacts in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY, June 14 (PNA) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) Eastern Visayas regional office here is preparing for the impacts of La Niña to the local tourism industry.

DOT Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes said together with the help of stakeholders, they should come up with a plan to offer alternative activities during heavy rains in the region.

The official also asked local government units to actively participate in the planning process. Hotel owners are asked to ensure safety of their guests during extreme conditions.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that rainy season will be experienced in many parts of the country on the second half of the year.

The region, according to Tiopes, has many attractions that offer outdoor activities, which are vulnerable to impacts of La Niña phenomenon.

The tourism department is targeting at least 1.4 million tourist arrivals this year.

Top tourist destinations in Eastern Visayas include the Bela Cuatro Island, known for its white and pink sand beaches, historical structures, and rock formations in Northern Samar.

In Samar province, top destinations are the Ulot River within the Samar Island National Park, Sohoton Cave Natural Bridge and National Park, and Marabut Rock Formations.

Other known spots are Sambawan Island in Maripipi, Biliran; Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte; and dive sites in Southern Leyte. (PNA)
