Samar police launches manhunt vs private armies behind attacking cops

TACLOBAN CITY, June 20 (PNA) -– The Philippine National Police (PNP) has launched a manhunt operation against a group of private armies engaged in a fire fight on Saturday with law enforcers that injured two police inspectors in Calbayog City.

PNP Eastern Visayas Regional Director Chief Supt. Jose Erwin Villacorte said that teams have been deployed even to remote areas of Calbayog in Samar to hunt private armies following an encounter with them in upland Tapae village.

On Saturday morning, a tracker team led by Sr. Insp. Zalde Cagampang, encountered about 20 members of private armed groups believed to be the group of Jimmy Managaysay.

The police, according to Villacorte, endured the heavy fire fight that lasted for more than 20 minutes, hurting Insp. Kim Oribillo and Insp. Alexander Alfonso.

The group of Jimmy Managaysay managed to withdraw. The police believed that some private armies were hurt since they saw bloodstains along the escape route towards the mountainous part of Tapae village.

The police recovered a semi automatic rifle at the scene.

Wounded cops were brought to St. Camillus Hospital in Calbayog City.

According to police records, Managaysay and his group was behind the brutal killings of Sonny Regulacion, and his three young children in Victory village in Calbayog last September 2015.

The Managaysay group is one of those armed groups actively proliferating in Samar based on police intelligence reports. Their leader is allegedly linked to politicians in Samar.

“Police operation is still going on, however, we recognize that there is no quick fix to bring about stability and peace in Samar,” Villacorte added. (PNA)
