TACLOBAN
CITY, June 21 (PNA) -– The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) inaugurated
on Tuesday the PHP13.5 million food processing shared service facility (SSF) at
the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) campus here.
DTI
Secretary Adrian Cristobal, Jr. led the inauguration of what he called as one
of the biggest SSFs in the country designed to improve the products of micro
small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and raise their production volume.
“This kind
of facility will help MSMEs cope with increasing market demand of
locally-produced processed food products in the region. This will also provide
packaging and labeling services, which is critical for most small food
producers,” Cristobal told reporters.
The trade
department has identified 12 local food products suited for retort processing.
These are the chocolate moron, milkfish, barinday, binagol, sagmani, suman
latik, suman balintawak, pinangat, mussel, fruit jams, marmalade, and sardines.
The DTI had
put up PHP8 million for the acquisition of food processing equipment,
processing equipment, food packaging equipment, and food labeling and designing
equipment.
As their
counterpart, the EVSU management, as project cooperator, provided transformer,
building, operating cost water connection, and miscellaneous supplies with a
total cost of PHP5.5 million.
SSF is a
project under the DTI Big Push for SME development program, which hopes to
address the gaps and bottlenecks in the value chain of an identified priority
cluster. This is achieved by providing processing and manufacturing tools,
equipment and machines for the common use of the MSMEs.
Cristobal
and other DTI key officials were in this city this week for the three-day
Negosyo,
Konsumer, At Iba Pa (NKATBP), which aims to bring DTI closer to the
people in the most impactful way through the actual provision of DTI’s
integrated services concentrated at a certain locality.
