Samar mayoralty bet survives ambush

CALBAYOG CITY, Samar, May 9 (PNA) – A mayoralty candidate and his companion in the town of San Jorge, Samar survived an ambush incident early Monday morning.

San Jorge town chief of police Sr. Insp. Genaro Nabual said the incident happened around 4:15 a.m. at the town’s Anquiana village while the victims were on board of a van from Catbalogan City.

Police identified the victims as town Councilor Lester Bisnar, 48 years old, resident of La Paz village and a mayoralty bet under the Nacionalista Party ticket. He is running against former Mayor Joseph Grey, husband of the current mayor.

His companion was identified as Noel Javolin, 37, a farmer and a resident of Matalon village.
The victims suffered gunshot wounds in their legs and were brought to a nearby hospital.

Nabual said that based on their initial investigation and accounts of eye witnesses, suspects were identified as Stephen Grey, Norman Bernales and Emmanual Pacampara.

The local police launched a manhunt operation to arrest the suspects. Authorities eye politics as one of the angle on the motive behind the attack. (PNA)
