CITY, May 9 (PNA) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Eastern Visayas has
arrested 13 liquor ban violators as of Monday morning as part of the drive to
strictly enforce election-related laws.
PNP Eastern
Visayas spokesperson Chief Insp. Ma. Bella Rentuaya said 12 of the violators
are from Naval, Biliran while the other one is from Pintuyan, Southern Leyte.
“Violators
were nabbed through mobile patrol and reports from concern citizens,” she said.
The liquor
ban from May 8-9, 2016 prohibits individuals to sell, furnish, offer, buy,
serve, or take intoxicating liquor anywhere in the country.
Only
establishments such as hotels, restaurants and resorts certified by the
Department of Tourism as tourism-oriented may apply for exemption with the
Commission on Elections (Comelec).
The PNP, the
National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), regional election directors, provincial
election supervisors, city and town election officers and other election law
enforcement team were tasked to implement the ban.
The Comelec
said violation of the liquor ban "shall be punishable with imprisonment of
not less than one year but not more than six years and shall not be subject to
probation."
Offenders
will also be disqualified from holding public office and will be banned from
voting. (PNA)
