The seedling is a
symbol of the athletes’ support in taking part in the sports meet and also
their contribution to protect the environment.
The city government
and the Department of Education here prepared about 4,500 mahogany seedlings
for planting in their respective schools and in their communities.
Department of
Education Regional Director Ramil Uytico has branded the idea as “something
unique” and a first time in the history of the sporting event.
The idea of the host
division and city is in line with the theme of this year’s EVRAA which is
“Sports, Culture and Environment: bridging the gap, shaping the future.”
“Our athletes usually
compete to win gold but having the tree, the seedling is an ideal input for
them on how they can help in preserving and protecting the environment,” Uytico
said on Tuesday.
“This is a complete
package because we will not only concentrate on winning medals, but will also
instill into the minds of our athletes the value of taking care of our
environment by planting trees,” the official added.
The mahogany seedling
will be named after the winners. A tag will also be attached on the seedling
which reflects the EVRAA colors, logo and medal that they earned. The athlete
can keep the tag as souvenir in winning at EVRAA.
Other division may
also replicate this idea of Calbayog City, said Uytico but they might also
come-up with other concept when it’s their time to host EVRAA.
Next year’s host for
EVRAA is Ormoc City after Mayor Richard Gomez volunteered his city to DepEd.
As of Tuesday
afternoon, the 13 delegations have already earned 18 gold medals with six won
by Northern Samar province; five by Leyte province; two each by Ormoc City,
Maasin City, and Calbayog City, and one by Biliran province.
The regional sports
event officially opened on Sunday and will end on Friday night. (RTA/PNA)
