Ormoc Mayor Richard
Gomez said sports has been one of his priorities believing sports plays a big
role in molding the future of the youth.
“Our journey towards
victory in Region 8 games began with a single pair of shoes. I knew all along
that if our athletes were using the correct pair of shoes, with the proper
sporting equipment, and being taught by high level coaches, these could spell
victory in our quest for number one. And it happened today!” Gomez said in a
statement issued during the event’s closing on Friday.
Other winners are
Leyte (88 gold, 69 silver, and 56 bronze) as first runner up, Maasin City (24
gold, 35 silver, and 30 bronze) as second runner up, Baybay City (22 gold, 45
silver, and 32 bronze) as third runner up, and Tacloban City (22 gold, 27
silver, and 28 bronze) as fourth.
The
actor-turned-politician thanked students who sacrificed their time for the
training.
“Thank you to our
schools and teachers who shared their time to learn together with the athletes
to improve their coaching skills, to our Deped officials in Ormoc, to our city
council and sports office. This is history for us.”
Meanwhile, Ramir
Uytico, DepEd Eastern Visayas Regional Director said that winning is just
secondary objective since working together and endurance is the primary goal.
“All our sufferings,
the sleepless nights just to prepare for this EVRAA meet are offered to you,
you are the reasons for our existence in the Department of Education,” Uytico
said.
Uytico further
encouraged the athletes to thank their parents for allowing them to attend the
regional sports events.
Eastern Visayas
athletes are set to prepare for the Palarong Pambansa to be held in Vigan,
Ilocos Sur on April 16-20.
According to him, at
least 700 coaches, assistant coaches and athletes will join the Eastern Visayas
