In an executive order
signed Monday night, Mayor Cristina Romualdez said she suspended classes in all
levels as the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council warned of
heavy rains that might trigger flooding and landslide in the region.
“In anticipation of
weather disturbance and due to recent flooding of some areas in the city, a
need for another localized cancellation or suspension of classes on all levels
public and private schools should be implemented,” Romualdez said.
This is the second
day in a row that the local government suspended classes in the city due to a
tail of a cold front, which dumped heavy rains since Saturday.
The incessant rain
triggered a landslide that killed four people in city’s Quarry district.
Several residential areas and road were inundated by rain water, including a
major highway that links the city to Samar Island and Luzon.
The city government
forcibly evacuated seven families away from the landslide site.
Mayor Remedios Petilla
also extended the suspension of classes in all levels on Tuesday in Palo town,
the catchment area of the Binahaan River and its tributaries from the towns of
Pastrana, Dagami, and Tanauan.
Floods affect the
highly populated communities of Cogon, San Joaquin, Tacuranga, Cangumbang,
Cabarasan Guti, and San Antonio. (SQM/PNA)
