TACLOBAN
CITY, Dec. 6 -- A 4.9-magnitude earthquake shook some parts
of Samar and Leyte Island on Wednesday morning, the Philippine Institute of
Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
There was
no immediate report of damage or injuries from the quake that struck 14 km.
south of Salcedo, Eastern Samar at 10:48 a.m.
Tremor
was felt at Intensity 3 in Guiuan and Lawaan in Eastern Samar, according to
Phivolcs’ latest earthquake information.
Minor
ground shaking was also felt in the regional capital Tacloban City.
For the
first five days of December, Phivolcs has already recorded five plotted
earthquakes in the region – those in San Policarpo, Eastern Samar (magnitude
2.9); Palapag, Northern Samar (magnitude 3.3); Capoocan, Leyte (magnitude 3.3);
and Hinabangan, Samar (magnitude 3.2).
The
presence of the active Philippine Fault Zone and lineaments have made 29 towns
and cities in Eastern Visayas prone to earthquakes, according to Phivolcs. (SQM/PNA)
