TACLOBAN
CITY, Sept. 19 -- The Department of Science and Technology
(DOST) in Eastern Visayas turned over PHP76-million worth of post-Yolanda
recovery projects on Tuesday as part of the Regional Science and Technology
Week celebration.
Bulk of
the funds amounting to PHP35 million is intended for community projects that
utilize locally-developed technologies. Tagged as beneficiaries are 45 local
government units in the region, said DOST Regional Director Edgardo
Esperancilla.
“Community
projects aim to transfer technologies to beneficiaries along the areas of
education, health and nutrition, water and sanitation, disaster risk reduction,
and industry development or livelihood,”
Esperancilla
told reporters during the event at the Robinsons Place here.
Earlier,
the DOST has forged ties with state universities and colleges, take part in the
implementation of community projects through conduct of research, access
information, develop new products, educate a community, and access sources of
funds.
It has
also turned over some Starbooks which contain thousands of digitized science
and technology resources in various formats (text and video/audio) placed in
specially designed pods set in a user-friendly interface to these institutions.
The
central government had set aside PHP12 million from the Yolanda Rehabilitation
and Recovery Program (YRRP) for the installation of 225 digital library in
schools. YRRP is the government’s reconstruction master plan for areas ravaged
by the super typhoon on Nov. 8, 2013.
Part of
the YRRP is the PHP10 million outlay to finance existing science and technology
livelihood projects and enhance transaction of DOST field offices in the
region.
The
remaining PHP9 million of the PHP76 million has been allocated for the
acquisition of e-trikes for distribution in different parts of the region. The
electric-powered vehicle will significantly decrease carbon monoxide emission.
The
project will also set up rapid electric vehicle charging stations. (SQM/PNA)
