PALO, Leyte, July 18 --The Philippine Institute of
Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) will complete on July 23 its quick
response assessment of the magnitude 6.5 earthquake that rocked Leyte province
on July 6.
A team has been deployed on July 9 by Phivolcs main
office as quick response team tasked to check quake-hit areas.
Myra Dolina, Phivolcs Eastern Visayas science
research analyst, said the team has been conducting earthquake hazard
assessment, check damaged buildings, lead an information drive, and monitor
aftershocks. Priority areas are Ormoc City and the towns of Jaro and Kananga.
Assessment findings will be presented to members of
the Regional Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC).
As of Tuesday morning, Phivolcs has recorded 986
afteshocks in Leyte with 121 ground shaking categorized as plotted and 31 as
felt. Experts still expect plotted aftershocks in Leyte in the next two weeks.
The July 6 earthquake has killed at least three
people and injured 310 others. Several aftershocks rocked the province in
nearly two weeks. The strongest was magnitude 5.8 that injured 78 people,
according to the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).
The fatalities include a 40-year-old man from
Kananga town, 19-year-old woman from Ormoc City, and 88-year-old woman from
Carigara town.
Initially, government agencies identified a total
of 113 schools, 10 health facilities, 35 government buildings, and seven
commercial buildings in Leyte province as badly damaged by the tremor.
Total damage to properties is pegged at PHP220.21
