MAASIN CITY, Southern Leyte, May 31-- The
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) district engineering office here
will kick off in June the second phase in the construction of new office
building to fully complete the project within the year.
District Engineer Ma. Margarita C. Junia said civil
works had been temporarily stopped early this year after the completion of the
project’s first phase.
“The original budget proposal was PHP30 million,
but only PHP25 million was approved. We need additional PHP11 million since we
redesigned the building in compliance to International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) 9001:2015,” Junia said.
The two-storey building with floor area of 525
square meters is within the 10,000 square meter Area Equipment Service compound
in Barangay Ibarra, this city.
The existing crowded office building of the
DPWH-Southern Leyte district engineering office near the provincial capitol in
Asuncion village will not be demolished to maintain the DPWH’s presence near
the provincial seat.
Junia requested the funds for the proposed
construction of the new office building through a memorandum dated April 16,
2015.
Junia pushed for the relocation of their office to
increase the working area and ensure safety of workers since the province is
vulnerable to ground shaking.
“It’s hard for personnel to be efficient with the
very limited space. Sometimes three personnel share a single office desk,”
Junia said.
Based on the evaluation of the Bureau of Design,
the existing district engineering office was found out to have a very low
comprehensive strength and the core test results showed that the said building
did not meet the minimum requirements for earthquake resistant
structures.(DPWH-PR/PNA)
