CARIGARA, Leyte, June 6-- The Jugaban Bridge in
this town will be closed for its PHP4.6 million widening project by the Second
Leyte Engineering District of the Department of Public Works and Highways
(DPWH).
An alternative route however is provided for
transportation, motorists and the travelling public along one of the region’s
busiest highways. The bridge will be closed starting Tuesday, the start of the
construction.
District Engineer Carlos Veloso said the bridge
widening project was part of the thrust of the district office to ease out
traffic and ensure a safer and smoother travel for all types of vehicles taking
this route.
The project cost a total of PHP4.6 million and will
span the length of 12.66 meters. Bridge widening project is to complement the
road widening also being undertaken by the DPWH all over the area. The Jugaban
Bridge has been a two-lane bridge for many years and is now in need of a good
repair.
The DPWH advised motorists to take the alternative
route which was the interior streets of Carigara town for the duration that the
bridge was impassable.
Veloso asked the public to bear the adverse effects
of the project, saying the expansion project would be for the greater good that
could last a long time.
The DPWH has continued to lobby funding to widen
all two-lane bridges in the region into four lanes as road widening continues.
