PALO, Leyte, May 19 -- The Department of Education
(DepEd) is conducting a student-led hazard mapping in partnership with
non-government organization "Save The Children".
This movement is an initial step in teaching the
students about disaster preparedness and management.
About 10 to 15 students and staff of "Save the
Children" with a disaster risk reduction and management officer have been
involved in hazard mapping, said Karen Barril, DepEd Leyte division information
officer.
“Less than 20 schools in the towns of Palo, Tanauan
and Tolosa were already examined by our department with our partners,” Barril
told reporters.
The DepEd activity aims to improve the students’
awareness on hazards and risks within and around the school, increase their
participation in addressing potential disasters by reducing vulnerabilities,
and inculcate a culture of safety in their daily routine.
Barril said there would be a summary to synthesize
what the students had observed and checklist would be provided to identify the
potential hazards in the school.
The map will be validated and posted around in the
school and village facilities.
The conduct of student-led school watching and
hazard mapping was in compliance to DepEd Order No. 23 issued in 2015.(Meagan
