MAASIN CITY, May 20 -- The Department of Public
Works and Highways' (DPWH) Southern Leyte district engineering office has
deployed maintenance workers to help prepare classrooms, school grounds, and
roads leading to campuses for the opening of the new academic year.
Maintenance section chief, Gideon Sacro, said all
field personnel tasked to maintain roads have shifted their focus to class
opening preparations starting Monday to support the Department of Education’s
(DepEd) 'Brigada Eskwela'.
“We have been helping in beautifying and turning
each school in this province into a more conducive learning space and safe for learners,”
Sacro said.
The week-long school preparation activities, held
on May 15-20, covered 444 public elementary and secondary schools in 18 towns
and Maasin City in Southern Leyte with a total enrollment of 91,712 as of last
year.
This year’s Brigada Eskwela is anchored on the
theme, “Isang DepEd, Isang Pamayanan, Isang Bayanihan para sa Ligtas na
Paaralan”.
District Engineer, Ma. Margarita Junia, ordered
about half of the engineering office's maintenance workers to join the
week-long school preparation activities, heeding DepEd's requests.
Junia asked maintenance engineers to coordinate
with DepEd for prioritization because many schools have asked for assistance to
clean school grounds and repaint classrooms.
“Aside from preparing campuses, we are also
repainting pedestrian lanes to ensure the safety of students, and clearing
roads leading to schools of obstructions,” she added.
The annual Brigada Eskwela is the National Schools’
Maintenance Week that aims to bring together all education stakeholders to
contribute their time, effort and resources to prepare public school facilities
for the opening of classes. (DPWH-PR/PNA)
