DepEd exec commends ‘Palaro’ athletes despite low rank

PALO, Leyte, May 9-- A top official of the Department of Education (DepEd) said on Tuesday that there was something worth celebrating for the Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) even if the team moved two ranks down in the recently concluded Palarong Pambansa.

Regional Director Ramir Uytico said the region was recognized for special awards landing the 5th place as the most disciplined group and best in billeting. Organizers also cited the region for having the best managed kitchen.

“According to evaluators, we are now very good from very poor in the past. That is because everyone did their part,” he added.

However, EVRAA ranked 15th in the Palarong Pambansa 2017 from 13th place in the previous year in all athletic events.

The region earned 30 medals - seven gold, five silvers, and 18 bronzes, higher than the 18 medals brought home last year.

“I told our athletes and coaches that experience matters more and medals are just a bonus. As long as they have won without cheating, I’m proud of them,” Uytico said .

“We focused on boosting the athlete’s confidence and dynamism despite the previous disasters like super typhoon Yolanda and not make it as a hindrance, but rather a motivation.”

The Palarong Pambansa is an annual multi-sporting event involving student-athletes from 18 regions in the country organized and governed by DepEd.

This year’s event was held from April 23 to 29 in Antique.
