TACLOBAN CITY, May 2-- The Department of
Agriculture (DA) Regional Executive Director U-Nichols Manalo has picked a
farmer-director for the month-long celebration of Farmers' and Fisherfolk's
month, from May 2 to 31.
The installation of Esteban Montalban Conchas,
chairman of the Regional Agriculture and Fishery Council, as farmer-director
was held on Tuesday at the DA regional office compound, Kanhuraw Hill, this
city.
This is in compliance with Memorandum Order dated
March 27, 2017 signed by Secretary Emmanuel F. PiƱol.
According to Francis Rosaroso, regional information
officer, the 71-year old Conchas of Obrero village, Calbayog City, Samar, was a
government workers and served for more than 27 years.
Shortly after his retirement, he was hooked on
farming and planted rice, corn and jackfruit in his five-hectare land. He was
later elected to head the Agriculture and Fishery Council (AFC) of Calbayog
City in Samar.
Under his leadership, Calbayog was the recipient of
the Gawad Saka National Outstanding AFC in 2006, besting AFCs of the different
regions in the country.
Gawad Saka is an annual search of the agency in
order to give recognition and take pride in honoring the farmers and fisherfolk
organizations in the Philippines.
During his stint as Farmer-Director, Conchas'
priority will focus on proposals from disadvantaged groups which have less
chance to get their requests approved, among others.(Vicky C. Arnaiz/PNA)
