NAVAL, Biliran, May 12 - "Tribo Gapnod"
of Almeria town retained its status as "Hudyaka Festival of
Festivals" grand champion.
Tribo Gapnod bested other groups and won PHP100,000
cash prize and special awards for best in street dance and best in festival
music during the celebration on Thursday night.
Celebrated in Almeria during its charter
anniversary every September 1, the festival is a tribute to the town’s humble
beginnings, just like the lowly “gapnod” and its present accomplishments.
Gapnod is a local term for the floating wreckage of
a boat. Dance and rituals by the festival is based on the town’s history
Other winners are Ibid Festival of Caibiran as 1st
runner up. They also won best in festival costumes. Tribo Boro-Biliran won
second place, and Bagasombol Festival of Naval placed third.
“The last time we had this festival was in 2012.
During our 25th anniversary as province this year, we decided to revive it,”
said Governor Gerardo Espina, Jr.
The provincial government provided PHP50,0000
financial assistance to every contingent to encourage participation.
The Hudyaka Festival of Festivals is Biliran’s way
of commemorating its provincehood.
Biliran was a sub-province of Leyte. It became a
regular province on May 11, 1992 following a plebiscite.
It is one of the country's smallest provinces
