TACLOBAN CITY, March 2 (PNA) – A women’s march
participated by city hall employees kicked off the month-long National Women’s
Month celebration of the city government here on Thursday.
The event spearheaded by the Government Association
of Tacloban Employees (GATE) started 5:30 a.m. at the city hall grounds and
proceeded to the Astrodome.
“We Make Change for Women,” is this year’s theme,
which underscores the active participation of women in the country’s economic,
socio-cultural and political developments.
The celebration this year will center on the full
implementation of the Magna Carta of Women, also known as Republic Act 9710 by
making known programs and services that strategically address the needs of
women.
Mayor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez will lead city
government offices in the following activities related to the celebration this
March: Women’s Fair at the City Engineer’s Gym (March 8) organized by the Local
Council of Women; Job Fair (March 22); Women’s Forum at the North (March 17);
two-day Women’s Summit (March 21 to 22); Women’s Shelter Anniversary (March
23), DMCC Cares for Women’s Congress (March 29); and as culmination activity —
the City Government Women Employee’s Day (March 31).
Romualdez is a staunch supporter of women’s rights
that under her watch, the city local council of women was organized whose task
is to help institutionalize city government projects for the welfare of women.
She also initiated the putting up of a Women’s
Shelter in the City — the first facility in Eastern Visayas managed by a local
government, which offers psychosocial support and shelter for abused women and
their children. (PNA)
