ORMOC CITY, Leyte, Feb. 13 (PNA) – The National
Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) inaugurated a schoolhouse and water supply
project in two neighboring towns here as part of the company’s corporate social
responsibility in communities traversed by its transmission line towers.
On Monday, it turned over a PHP3.5 million
three-classroom building to Kananga Central School.
Since its establishment in 2010, NGCP has built 25
school buildings in Leyte and Samar province, said NGCP advocacy officer Eva Malilay.
On the same occasion, a separate two-storey
seven-classroom building worth PHP9.5 million was also blessed, which was
funded from the Kananga municipal government’s Special Education Fund.
The day before, NGCP officials cut the ribbon for a
water supply system in Masumbang, Merida town.
The PHP1.5 million project feeds water to a
6,400-gallon capacity reservoir using a submersible pump, paving the way for
the development of a level one water system.
Three public faucets are located strategically to
serve 59 households in the immediate vicinity as well as the elementary and
high schools in the community.
Councilor Virgilio Hitgano said the project means
so much for a 4th class town like Merida. Masumbang is a mountain village some
20 kilometers away from the town center.
NGCP Ormoc converter station head Sisinio Quindao
requested residents to help them watch over the 13 steel towers spanning six to
seven kilometers in their village. He explained that even one pilfered steel
bar can compromise a tower’s strength to withstand winds of up to 300 kph.
