TACLOBAN CITY, Feb. 9 (PNA) -- The Philippine
Coconut Authority (PCA) Eastern Visayas office has confiscated 22,346 board
feet of coconut lumber in Eastern Visayas since the government imposed a
three-month logging ban this year.
With the help of police and port officials, the PCA
has intercepted five truckloads of coconut logs in Leyte and Northern Samar
provinces, said Benjamin Yu, PCA regional regulatory officer.
From Jan. 3 to Feb. 7, authorities apprehended log
ban violators in Tanauan, Barugo, Tacloban City, and Pastrana in Leyte; and
Allen in Northern Samar.
The PCA deputized police personnel from different
provinces in the region to monitor cutting of coconut trees.
The moratorium is effective for three months
starting Jan. 3, 2017, while there is an ongoing review of the implementing
rules and regulations of Republic Act (RA) 10510593.
RA 10510593 amends RA 8048 or the Coconut
Preservation Act, which aims to streamline the processes related to permits and
