2 hurt as grenade blasts hit Samar mayor’s house

SAN JORGE, Samar, Jan. 31 (PNA) -- A police officer and a security aide were hurt in a grenade blast that hit the house of the town mayor here early Tuesday.

The local police reported that three grenade blasts hit two residential houses and a warehouse owned by Mayor Joseph Grey in Mancol village here around 2 a.m.

The incident wounded Artemio Rebato, a junior police officer assigned to secure the mayor and security aide Jimmy Mariquit.

Supt. Feliciano Romero, officer-in-charge of Samar police provincial office said they are now hunting those responsible for the grenade attack.

A team from the police explosive ordinance disposal proceeded to the blast site Tuesday morning.

“Standard operating procedures are now being conducted at the blast site to establish the motive of the blast,” Romero said.

The mayor was not hurt during the incident. Grey’s family has been ruling the town for more than a decade.

San Jorge is about 140 kilometers from Tacloban City, the regional capital. It is a fourth class town subdivided into 42 villages with a population of more than 17,000. (PNA)
