Leyte town brings DRRM advocacy to secondary schools

PALOMPON, Leyte, Jan. 6 (PNA) -- The local government unit here has stepped up its disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) advocacy among the town’s secondary students.

On Saturday, the local government will kick off the teaching of DRRM to Grade 7 to Grade 11 students after the signing of a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Education.

The 22-module training for learners done every Saturday is meant to raise awareness on protecting themselves as well as increase their chance to survive during emergencies.

“The training will not only save their life, but also their respective family members and people in their community,” Mayor Ramon Oñate said.

Part of the module is rescue training at the town’s Liberty Eco-Adventure Park. The training supports the town’s local tourism development program.

Oñate pointed out that it is their priority to empower their residents on disaster management and climate change mitigation.

Two months ago, Palompon town was chosen as one of the 10 winners for the climate-adoptive and disaster-resilient (CLAD) award for cities and municipalities.

The town is known for Kalanggaman Island, a premiere tourist destination in the province which is popular to tourists due to its turquoise clear water and sand bar. (PNA)
