Calbayog City athletes prepare for 2016 regional sports meet

CALBAYOG CITY, Samar, Jan. 19 (PNA) – Some 407 athletes representing this city will join in this year’s Eastern Visayas Regional Athletic Association (EVRAA) Meet to be held in Naval, Biliran on Feb. 5, 2017.

City education supervisor Ubaldo Diomangay said 162 elementary learners will compete in 13 sports events and 245 athletes will contend for medals of the 19 out of 21 events for the secondary level.

“We started earlier our selection process and in October last year, our athletes started their school-based training,” Diomangay said.

Early this week, all athletes started their 15-day in-house concentration training.

“This training is vital to them especially to the team events with players coming from different schools. They have to be together for them to be acquainted with one another and learn the value of teamwork in winning a game,” Diomangay stressed.

The official admitted that in the past years, the Calbayog City delegation was placed in the lowest rank in regional sports events.

“We are not losing hope especially that the city government is very supportive to our education programs. Some of our players are now utilizing the sports facilities provided by the local government,” Diomangay shared.

The school official is upbeat on the completion of the athletes’ dormitory, a project of the city government, for billeting of trainees.

“The city mayor likewise has a plan for a scholarship program to athletes who will excel in their sports events.”

The local government unit has allocated PHP2 million for the delegation. Bulk of the amount will be spent for the uniform, foods and vitamins of the athletes.

Aside from the athletes, at least 150 coaches, chaperons, trainers and officials will join the delegation in Naval, Biliran.

The official thanked parents and guardians of athletes for allowing their children to join the regional athletic event.

“The support extended by the parents to their children has a good impact for the athlete to perform better and show their best in the competition,” she added. (PNA)
