TACLOBAN
CITY, Dec. 21 (PNA) -- Members of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction
and Management Council (RDRRMC) convened Wednesday afternoon to tackle
preparations for the possible impacts of a rainy Christmas in Eastern
Visayas.
During its 4th quarter meeting, the inter-agency council
concluded that most local government units in low lying communities are
prepared for effects of weather disturbances.
“This Christmas
season, we will expect an unwelcome visitor. We have to prepare to
ensure the safety of families and minimize damages to crops and
properties,” said RDRRMC Chairperson Edgar Posadas.
The council
discussed about pre-disaster needs assessment and contingency plans of
various agencies for the low pressure area that may develop into a
severe tropical storm.
According to the state weather bureau, low
pressure area will dump heavy rains on Christmas eve in Bicol and
Eastern Visayas provinces. It will be named “Nina” once it develops into
a storm.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development
reported that municipal action teams in six provinces have been alerted
of impending weather disturbances.
The DSWD asks for additional
prepositioned relief goods for several towns in Samar Island considering
that stocks have been distributed to families displaced by widespread
flooding over the weekend.
Department of Health Eastern Visayas
assistant regional director Paula Paz Sydiongco said their office has
assigned health workers to respond to emergencies on a weekly basis even
during holidays.
“Starting
this week, we are on a cold white alert to monitor firecracker
injuries. The same personnel will respond to emergencies arising from
natural calamities,” Sydiongco added. (PNA) LAP/SQM/Diane Mae Derio
