72 Tacloban families to benefit from locally-funded shelter project

TACLOBAN CITY, Dec. 8 (PNA) -- The city government here will turnover next week 36 units of core shelter project funded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The PHP9.3 million housing project funded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) meant for the city’s coastal villages is now almost complete days before its awarding on December 15, according to a press statement of the city government posted in its website.

Each unit of duplex house has a 40 square-meter floor area with a lot area of 50 square meters. New houses have been constructed on a lot owned by the city government in Sto. Niño village. The relocation site is intended for 72 families.

Building of houses was done through the “sweat equity,” scheme which requires beneficiaries to render 500 hours of service to complete the project.

According to city social welfare officer Milagros Cabling, the beneficiaries went through social preparation before they could avail of the housing project.

“This included a series of surveys and the city government required them to organize into a neighborhood association,” she said.

This latest project is the second phase of the core shelter project implemented by the city government with funding from the DSWD regional office. The government completed the first 66 units in 2013 and availed of by landslide-affected families in Upper Nula-Tula village. (PNA)
