Pedia group helps curb teenage pregnancy in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY, Nov. 15 (PNA) − The Philippine Pediatric Society (PPS) in Eastern Visayas has launched a school-based caravan to educate children on the consequences of teenage pregnancy in the region.

The group prioritized the campaign considering that the region is the second highest in live-in arrangements among teenagers in the Philippines in the past decade, according to La Rhaine Viernes, PPS regional chapter president.

The activity is part the National Children’s Month celebration of the group.

“We have many campaigns but we prioritize this caravan for we acknowledge the importance of educating children to reduce teenage pregnancy incidence in our region,” Viernes said.

The caravan has an interactive session and has partnered with teachers and parents in educating the children.

Viernes assured that the caravan will not stop even after the month-long celebration but will continue in the next 15 months. If possible, they will visit schools all over the region.

The PPS is a medical specialty society recognized regionally and internationally as the leader in relevant aspects of child care.

Mary Grace Uy, PPS project head on anti-pregnancy explained that lack of education, curiosity, and family set-up are factors leading to teenage pregnancies.

“We have been telling the teenagers about the good news that sex is not the answer and true love waits,” Uy added.

Uy emphasized that to resolve this issue, everyone should go back to the family structure. Parents should teach their children good values and moral standards, and have an open communication at home.

“This is a concern of every citizen here and we really need to rise to do something about this particular problem,” Uy added.

“Isulong Kalidad na Edukasyon para sa Lahat ng Bata” is the theme for the National Children’s Month, which highlights children’s right to education and encourage stakeholders to advocate inclusive and equitable life-long learning opportunities for all children. (PNA) FPV/SQM/Ana Rose Cinco (OJT)
