Tacloban vice mayor asks residents to be vigilant vs. lawlessness

TACLOBAN CITY, Sept. 9 (PNA) -- Tacloban Vice Mayor Jerry Yaokasin has called on this city’s residents to remain vigilant, especially when they are in public places, despite the absence of bomb threats from any lawless group.

“Public safety is paramount and I want people to know that we are working with all local authorities, remaining vigilant and taking all necessary measures to keep Tacloban City safe,” Yaokasin said.

“The senseless attacks that struck the people of Davao have left us all stunned and heartbroken. However, as we have seen time and again, when we are united, terror has never prevailed and never will.”

Troops of the Army’s 78th Infantry Battalion and Engineering Battalion have joined the police in conducting street patrols and random vehicle inspections in checkpoints.

Policemen and soldiers have also been deployed to the airport, the new bus terminal, the San Juanico Bridge and other strategic areas.

Airport security personnel have been on high alert, while aviation police and members of the Philippine Air Force will monitor the passenger screening checkpoints.

“We have increased our security presence and patrol around the airport. The safety of passengers and airport personnel is our absolute priority also,” said City Police chief, Sr. Supt. Rolando Bade Jr. (PNA)
