Leyte town to celebrate feast day

SAN MIGUEL, Leyte, Sept. 26 (PNA) -- This town will be celebrating its feast day on Sept. 29 with activities bringing cheers to locals, relive its culture and showcase new development.

“We just had a successful opening salvo for our celebration with a parade where almost all sectors in the society were represented. We also had the first ever San Miguel district inter school drum and lyre competition,” said town Mayor Cheeryl Enrica Esperas.

The festivities started on Sept. 19 with a daily activities lined up until Sept. 29.

The local government held a parade during the opening day and capped the day with cultural presentations with Hawaiian theme.

Farmers were also able to display their local produce through Agri-Aqua Fair.

Esperas also officiated a mass wedding for 35 couples who have been living together for at least five years.

“It was not just an ordinary wedding. The couple celebrated the wedding like any other grand wedding reception to make the day memorable for the couples,” Esperas added.

A traditional Filipino games for children and blood donation were held as well as a talent presentation for the town’s senior citizens.

Local health workers also conducted a lecture on family planning program.

The Philippine National Police sponsored a pedicab race participated by the association of pedicab drivers.

Other activities are Search for Miss Department of Education, gathering of village officials and volunteers with Leyte Governor Dominic Petilla.

Still ongoing are inter-village basketball competition, a moral values quiz show, ballroom competition and a wheelaton for the differently abled persons.

The local government has slated this week the formal blessing and inauguration of the newly constructed fire station, senior citizen’s day center, and evacuation center.

The provincial government will sponsor a medical, optical and dental mission targeting to serve 1,300 beneficiaries.

The first ever Bathan festival will be shown on the Thursday while on the Friday, all events are centered on church activities being the feast of St. Michael the Archangel.

The celebration, according to Esperas is a thanksgiving for all the blessings received by their town.

San Miguel is a fourth class town in Leyte province. According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 17,561 people. The town is subdivided into 21 villages. (PNA)
