Surrendered drug personalities rise to nearly 7,000 in Eastern Visayas

TACLOBAN CITY, July 12 (PNA) -– The first 10 days of intensified anti-narcotics campaign has yielded 6,011 users and 858 peddlers in Eastern Visayas, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported.

PNP Eastern Visayas acting regional director Chief Supt. Elmer C. Beltejar said that thousands of drug personalities have been showing up at police stations and mayor’s office, confessing their involvement to illegal drugs.

Beltejar said they all pledged to abandon their illegal drugs activities after signing an affidavit of undertaking duly subscribed and sworn to before a notary public.

“They were not detained, but we will closely monitor them. We anticipate more to surrender the coming days. I encourage our public to continue supporting our fight against illegal drugs. Expect continuous anti-drug operations to be launched by your police,” he said in a statement sent to reporters Monday night.

Beltejar assured that the PNP in Region 8 will continue their efforts to eradicate illegal drugs in the region with the nationwide enforcement of “Double Barrel” strategy.

The concept is based on a double barrel gun, which fires two in just one squeeze of the trigger. The operation will simultaneously attack big-time drug lords and street-level trading.

The “first barrel”, according to Beltejar is directed to those at the top, while the "second barrel" is aimed at those in the bottom, which involves reforming drug users who want to get rid of drugs.

“The anti-drug campaign operations have no timeline and it will never stop until said menace is totally eradicated in the region,” Beltejar said.

Meanwhile, the regional office asked all units to conduct drug test to all policemen to ensure that no law enforcer is involved in illegal drugs.

In drug tests conducted for 100 key regional and provincial police officials, nobody was tested positive of illegal drugs use, according to PNP Eastern Visayas spokesperson Chief Insp. Ma. Bella D. Rentuaya. (PNA)
