Tacloban City revives enforcement of curfew ordinance

TACLOBAN CITY, June 10 (PNA) -– The city peace and order council and the local police here has revived this week the enforcement of curfew ordinance for minors.

Vice Mayor Jerry Yaokasin said that the local ordinance prohibits anyone less than 18 years to loiter on streets, avenues, alleys, parks or other public places between 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. the following day, unless accompanied by his or her parent or legal guardian.

“Nothing good comes of very young people being out during wee hours,” Yaokasin said.

“The curfew may be part of the answer. But let’s be honest with each other. That is not a magic wand that’s going to solve some of these issues,” he said.

“A curfew is a way of avoiding the problem,” Yaokasin said. “We just need to have better communities for young people.”

Yaokasin added that parents need to be part of larger effort to keep teens safe.
Meanwhile, city police chief Sr. Supt. Domingo Cabillan said the city’s minor ordinance city is a friendly law.

Curfew, according to Cabillan prevents juvenile crime, protect minors from becoming crime victims and reinforce parental control over their children.

“It is necessary for the good of the citizenry and our own youth, to implement energetic action to protect the residents of our community,” he added. (PNA)
