CITY, March 8 (PNA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)
regional office here conducted on Monday a slogan contest among the different
agency division in celebration of National Women’s Month Celebration revolving
on this year’s theme “Kapakanan ni Juana, Isama sa Agenda” (Include Women in
the Agenda).”
This annual
celebration giving importance to women’s role in nation building is by virtue
of Proclamation No. 224 s 1988 declaring the first week of March each year as
Women’s Week and March 8 as Women’s Rights and International Peace Day.
The annual
conduct of Women’s Month Celebration observed on the month of March through
Proclamation 227 issued in 1988, highlights yearly the role of women in our
society.
There were
16 entries that depicts the theme this year, which in the Waray language is
“Katungdanan ni Juana, Ig upod ha Adyenda.” The theme resonates the call for
gender-balance leadership and decision making.
According to
the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), this year’s celebration aims to
create an avenue for women and women advocates to celebrate the gains of the
current administration with regards to closing gender gap, as well as to call
on the next administration to continue supporting the advocacy and prioritize women’s
issues in various agenda.
It also
presents the achievements of the Aquino administration in promoting gender
equality and women’s empowerment, through the Report on the State of the
Filipino Women.
The
celebration gathers public perception on what women’s issues should be
prioritized by the next administration through crowd sourcing of “agenda ni
Juana.”
It will also
strengthen public advocacy on National Women’s Month, with emphasis on women’s
issues that still need to be addressed.
The PCW also
calls on government agencies to conduct activities that empower women and
include concerns on women’s leadership platforms and government development
agenda.
The winners
of the slogan contest will be announced on April 1. Winning entries will
receive special prizes. (PNA)
