TACLOBAN CITY, March 8 (PNA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) regional office here conducted on Monday a slogan contest among the different agency division in celebration of National Women’s Month Celebration revolving on this year’s theme “Kapakanan ni Juana, Isama sa Agenda” (Include Women in the Agenda).”

This annual celebration giving importance to women’s role in nation building is by virtue of Proclamation No. 224 s 1988 declaring the first week of March each year as Women’s Week and March 8 as Women’s Rights and International Peace Day.

The annual conduct of Women’s Month Celebration observed on the month of March through Proclamation 227 issued in 1988, highlights yearly the role of women in our society.

There were 16 entries that depicts the theme this year, which in the Waray language is “Katungdanan ni Juana, Ig upod ha Adyenda.” The theme resonates the call for gender-balance leadership and decision making.

According to the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW), this year’s celebration aims to create an avenue for women and women advocates to celebrate the gains of the current administration with regards to closing gender gap, as well as to call on the next administration to continue supporting the advocacy and prioritize women’s issues in various agenda.

It also presents the achievements of the Aquino administration in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment, through the Report on the State of the Filipino Women.

The celebration gathers public perception on what women’s issues should be prioritized by the next administration through crowd sourcing of “agenda ni Juana.”

It will also strengthen public advocacy on National Women’s Month, with emphasis on women’s issues that still need to be addressed.

The PCW also calls on government agencies to conduct activities that empower women and include concerns on women’s leadership platforms and government development agenda.

The winners of the slogan contest will be announced on April 1. Winning entries will receive special prizes. (PNA)
