NMP starts 100 days countdown to 38 years founding anniversary

TACLOBAN CITY, Feb. 3 (PNA) – The state-run National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP) unveils 100-days countdown marker on Tuesday at the NMP Training Complex grounds in line with the upcoming 38th Founding Anniversary on May 1, 2016.

The celebration has the theme, “Leaving an Imprint of Professional Excellence by Enhancing the Global Competitiveness of Filipino Seafarers”.

The ceremony started with a thanksgiving mass followed by the turnover of NMP anniversary hosting from the Maritime Training and Assessment Division (MTAD), which was the host in the previous year’s celebration, to the Maritime Research and Assessment Division (MRDD).

The presentation of the year-round activities and awarding of Jay Arr Bryan U. Margallo, the winner of the anniversary theme-generation contest as well as Ma. Nissa C. Espiritu for wearing the oldest edition of NMP shirt during the activity followed.

NMP OIC Executive Director Manuel C. Roldan, in his message, stressed the significance of the celebration and the contributions of NMP employees in fulfilling the agency’s mandate of providing quality trainings to Filipino seafarers.

“The countdown is on for a very significant occasion of the agency. They say that life begins at 40, but this is not true for NMP who has been serving the Filipino seafarers in the past 38 years. This occasion must be marked by the dedication of all NMP employees to the service of the Filipino people.” said Roldan.

NMP was established on May 1, 1978 by virtue of Presidential Decree 1369 as the government’s response to the immediate and dire need of updating and upgrading the capability and qualifications of marine licensed officers and other marine graduates for their increased acceptability for employment in international and domestic maritime fleets.

NMP began its operations by offering the Basic Messman Course. It pioneered in the conduct of upgrading, specialized and safety courses to merchant marine officers and ratings and initiated the development of training programs for trainers aimed at enhancing their instructional and assessment skills.

Likewise, together with international organizations, NMP developed other courses that address psychosocial issues in the maritime industry which are now implemented in maritime schools and private training centers. As of today, NMP offers a total of 24 training courses.

Apart from its training operations, the NMP also conducts industry researches towards improving the Philippine maritime manpower sector with its findings adopted as inputs in the formulation of maritime education and labor and employment policies.

The NMP encourages those interested to avail of its maritime training programs to visit the NMP facebook page (facebook.com\nmptrainingcenter) and website www.nmp.gov.ph where all related information on NMP trainings are available. (PNA)
