Tacloban mayor says Marcos deserves ‘proper burial’

TACLOBAN CITY, Aug. 31 (PNA) –- Mayor Cristina Gonzales-Romualdez has called on critics to “forget the past” and allow giving the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos a “proper burial” at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

The official said Marcos deserves to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani being a former soldier and president for 20 years. Cristina’s husband, former Mayor Alfred Romualdez, is the nephew of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, the late president’s wife.

“I feel that we should forget the past and move forward and give him proper burial that he deserves.

Let us not look at the past, let us forgive each other and move on,” Romualdez told reporters Monday.

Citing massive human right violations, petitioners against the burial have asked the Supreme Court to block the impending burial backed by President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Tacloban City, Imelda’s hometown, remains a bailiwick of the Romualdez clan that has ruled the city for nearly two decades now since 1998. (PNA)
