Newly-elected Leyte solon vows regular consultation with communities

CARIGARA, Leyte, May 17 (PNA) -– The newly-elected solon of Leyte’s 2nd district vowed to regularly conduct consultation with the community for him to be able to lobby proposed bills that would address basic services.

Neophyte Henry C. Ong toppled down political dynasty lead by patriarch Rep. Sergio Apostol, whose family ruled the second district for more than two decades.

Ong won in 10 out of 14 towns in the district. The provincial board of canvassers proclaimed him as winner on Sunday morning. He got 94,855 votes, ahead by 12,488 votes obtained by Apostol.

“The people’s voice has been heard. My victory is the victory of those people who voted for me. It’s amazing that they wanted change and I am truly honored that they wanted me to be the vehicle for change,” Ong said.

“It seems that the heavens are conspiring to put me in this position. It’s like the stars are aligned for me. We sold our business, quit my job and apply as the representative of the people of the second district.”

“I will push for change in the political settings in the second district. There would be more help to the people, promote transparency and stop corruption.”

Ong vowed to go back to communities and consult with them on what they want. Outcome from consultations will be his input for drafting of laws as well as pushing different government agencies to enhance their programs. (PNA)
